I recently returned from a volunteer trip (June 18–22) with Muslim Welfare Canada's Arctic Food Bank in Inuvik, NWT, and I witnessed firsthand the impact of this service on Indigenous families and communities.
The need is staggering. Nearly 70% of households in Nunavut experience food insecurity—more than 8 times the national average—while the Northwest Territories has the second-highest rate of food insecurity in Canada.
Food insecurity means that families cannot afford enough nutritious food, impacting health, mental well-being, learning, and the future of entire communities.
To help address this urgent need, Muslim Welfare Canada has established Arctic Food Bank branches in Inuvik, Fort McPherson, and Iqaluit, providing food, school supplies, and essential household items to families in the North.
During my time in Inuvik, I volunteered to distribute food baskets to Indigenous families who visited the food bank. Each basket contains:
🥛 2 boxes of milk
🌾 1 bag of flour
🥫 6 cans of soup
🍊 2 boxes of Tang juice
🍚 1 pack of sugar
🥜 1 jar of peanut butter
🫒 1 bottle of oil
🥣 1 large pack of cereal
🍗 1 frozen whole chicken
We did the math—this basic basket costs approximately $150 at local market prices. It's hard to imagine paying that much for what many of us would consider simple pantry staples.
No child should go to bed hungry in one of the world's wealthiest countries.
I returned from the North with deep gratitude, greater understanding, and a renewed commitment to support this vital work. I hope you'll join me in standing with our friends in Canada's North and working together toward food security for all.
